The newly sworn-in BJP Gujarat cabinet without a single member from the previous government headed by Vijay Rupani is a novelty of sorts. The new ministry starting on a fresh note gives the semblance of a freshly elected government. The BJP central leadership will hope that this will deflect any anti-incumbency sentiment that was building up over the last 45 months.But the party needs to ensure that the signalling doesn’t go awry. The opposition could go on the offensive now alleging that the Rupani government was an abject failure, which necessitated the wholesale change in the cabinet. The new ministers will also have to ensure that lack of administrative experience doesn’t come in the way of governance.
The Modi-Shah dispensation has also signalled its absolute control over the Gujarat BJP through this risky move. It took just a day to pacify the dissenters. With leaders attempting to play the caste card, PM Modi is signalling that no one is indispensable. The coming days will reveal how the BJP gambit plays out.
