10 tips to measure blood pressure properly
Regular monitoring of blood pressure is crucial for detecting hypertension, or high blood pressure that typically has no symptoms but is responsible for an increased risk of heart diseases and strokes when left untreated. There are times when you will be required to check your blood pressure at home. However, there is a lack of awareness when it comes to doing so.“Understand that checking your blood pressure may seem simple, but doing it the right way makes a big difference. Many people don’t realise that small things like sitting in an incorrect posture or having a full bladder can change the reading,” said Dr Bipeenchandra Bhamre, consultant cardiac surgeon, Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai.
Here’s a detailed guide on the correct way to check blood pressure at home.
1. To begin with, always empty your bladder before checking your blood pressure.
2. Sit calmly for five minutes.
3. Use a chair with back support, feet flat on the ground.
4. Don’t cross your legs.
5. Your arm should rest at heart level, supported on a table or cushion.
6. Also, make sure the cuff is the right size and placed correctly on your bare arm.
7. Don’t panic or stress, try to relax
8. Don’t talk, drink coffee, or smoke at least 30 minutes before taking the reading.
9. Take two readings, one minute apart, and use the average. Doing it at the same time every day also helps track your health better, said Dr Bhamre.
10. Don’t wear tight clothes.
Dr Bhamre emphasised that knowing these blood pressure readings regularly can motivate individuals to adopt healthy habits and be mindful of their lifestyle choices, including exercising, eating a balanced diet, and managing stress. “So, the next time you want to check your blood pressure, follow these crucial tips to get accurate readings,” said Dr Bhamre.
