'how dare you shout at the chair ' dhankhar rebukes derek o'brien other oppn leaders in rs
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar strongly criticized TMC leader Derek O'Brien and other opposition leaders following the chaos that erupted over demands for a discussion on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics. The opposition walked out of the House after their demand to discuss the matter was not taken up.
Dhankar reprimanded O'Brien, saying, ‘Mr Derek O'Brien, you are shouting at the Chair. Your conduct is ugliest in the House. I condemn this behaviour. Next time I will show you the door. How dare you shout at the Chair? Can anyone countenance such conduct? We have seen the ugliest of the scene.’
Referring to Phogat's disqualification Dhankar said, ‘They (Opposition) think they are the only ones whose hearts are bleeding...The entire nation is in pain because of the girl. everyone is sharing the situation but to monetise it, politicise it, is the greatest disrespect to the girl. That girl has a long way to go.’
Dhankar praised the Haryana government's decision to honor Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified for being overweight ahead of her gold medal bout in the 50 kg category, as if she were a medallist. Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that she would receive the same reward offered to Olympic Games silver medallists by the state government.
Meanwhile, Phogat announced her retirement from international wrestling, saying that she lacked the strength to continue. The 29-year-old, who was disqualified after being found 100 gm overweight before Wednesday's gold medal bout, took to social media to announce her decision and sought forgiveness from everyone who had supported her.
‘Maa, kushti mere se jeet gayi, main haar gayi. Maaf karna, aapka sapna, meri himmat sab toot chuke. Isse zyada taqat nahi rahi ab’ (Mom, Wrestling has defeated me, I have lost. I lost…my courage is all broken, I don't have any more strength now),’ Vinesh wrote on her social media account.
‘Alvida, kushti (Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024),’ she said.
Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha JP Nadda said that the way opposition members have behaved is condemnable.
‘The whole country is standing with Vinesh Phogat. The PM yesterday called her ‘Champion of champions’ and the PM’s voice is the voice of 140 crore people. Unfortunately, we are dividing this between the ruling side and the opposition. Unfortunately, the opposition does not have any solid issue which they want to discuss for which the ruling party is ready....I want to assure you that government of India, sports ministry and IOC tried redressal on all platforms,’ Nadda said
